| 4531 | Notes for ISAAC J. BIRDSALL: Buried with 2nd wife Sarah Gadsby and infant daughter Agnes at Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville, NY. Joined Gilbertsville Presby. church in 1879. Isaac was born in New Kingston and later the family moved to a purchased farm between Treadwell and Franklin, NY and did very well. It is thought that Isaac J. learned the grocery store business from his father's brother Isaac Birdsall who had a store & PO in New Kingston. These brothers, Jeremiah & Isaac lived as neighbours as found in census of 1850 and other facts. Isaac was the first postmaster, owning the building for it and his store. His large white home stands next to the PO and the next house was Jeremiah's, being where Isaac J. was born. Have visited the PO/ex-store in 1998; now owned and run by Doug & Frances Faulkner. She the Postmistress. Mr. Faulkner's mother was daughter of Isaac and they live in that house. Around 1872, he married Agnes Edgerton of and in Franklin, NY. He probably worked at the Edgerton Grocery and dry goods store in Franklin as he was not at father's home on 1870 Census. They had a son in Apr 1877 and wife died 27 Apr 1877, maybe from birthing complications. As found in notes about his wife Agnes, she was buried in Ouleout Cem. Franklin, NY. Saw the stone engraved. "We shall meet again". Notice of death in 1877 Delhi newspaper: "Birdsall, Agnes Edgerton, wife of Issac J. Birdsall & only daughter of Edward & Lucy Edgerton, at Franklin, 25 Apr, age 21 years." Two different of death at April 25th or 27th. The child, Edward Ira (Birdsall) was adopted by Agnes' parents and last name changed to Edgerton and did well in the teaching field. It might be that Isaac met his 2nd wife to be, Sarah Gadsby, at the funeral of his 1st wife Agnes Edgerton at Franklin, NY. Sarah's cousin Mary Wightman had married George Harry Edgerton, who was older brother of Agnes and lived at Franklin. Sarah's father's sister Anne Eliz. Gadsby, married William Wightman of Morris & had Mary, who married George Edgerton of Franklin, NY. The Edgerton's were first settlers of Franklin, NY. Thus, the Gadsby and Edgerton families were already related, and also, the mother of George & Agnes was Lucy Mellor Edgerton, who Mianda once wrote that the Mellor's were related to the old Gadsby family. A better search of the Mellor line is needed. There is a Deed made 9 Feb 1878 (on file at Cooperstown) by Issac J. Birdsall of the Town of New Berlin, where he buys 50 acres of land for $500 from Lucuis B. Powers of Town of New Berlin. Powers lived in Holmesville Town of New Berlin, Chenango County, NY as seemingly did Isaac, who might have been working in the Holmesville Store owned by husband of Edward Gadsby's daughter. The land was in Town of Butternuts about 1 mile south of Holmesville. Isaac soon sold the land back to Lucuis's son for $450. This was about six months before Isaac married Sarah. In a 4 Sep 1892 letter from a Mary Powers of Holmesville to Sarah (in file), it is learned that Isaac was called "Ike". So, the friendship lasted for years. It seems that with his marriage to Sarah, 27 Aug 1878, they never lived at Sarah's home, but rented locally. Sarah made a rent agreement with Mrs. E. Browne on Dec. 13, 1884 for a year. Sarah was then of Morris. Mianda Brown Gadsby wrote that she had been with dau. Sarah for a while when son Arthur was born. The other Mianda letters never mention Sarah & Isaac at her home, nor did she ever write about Isaac. When his wife Sarah bought and sold land, Isaac's name was never on Deeds. Item in Otsego Journal 31 Mar 1883, said that Charles Gadsby was going to work for his uncle in Morris and that brother-in-law Isaac J. Birdsall will work the John Gadsby farm this year. Isaac also had his grocery store to run. This may later become a problem why Isaac left wife & children. Item in Otsego Journal Newspaper, 10 Jun 1885: "Isaac J. Birdsall and wife have been visiting for the past week with relatives at Hamden, Delaware County. Perhaps with his sister Mary ELIDA Birdsall McAuslan and others of the area. Would expect they went by train from Mt. Upton to Sidney, then to Walton, and again changing to the Delhi branch that went through Hamden. Guess that they left their 19 month old daughter Helen with Mianda. Butternut Town Record, when son Arthur was born, Apr. 4, 1886, Isaac gave his birthplace as Middletown. This would be New Kingston in the Town of Middletown in Delaware County. In Otsego Journal Newspapers of April 1886, there are large ads of food & goods for the "New Cash Store" by I. J. Birdsall & Co., in the Lemley Building, Gilbertsville, NY. This still is the large wood building at the end of the Gilbert Block in Gilbertsville. (18 Aug 1996). Item in Otsego Journal, Feb. 1887: "Notice of Dissolution. Gilbertsville, 30 Jan 1887. The partnership heretofore existing under the firm name of I. J. Birdsall & Co., is this day dissolved by mutual consent, I. J. Birdsall & Co. The business formerly conducted by the above firm will be continued by I. J. Birdsall, who respectfully solicits a continuance of the liberal patronage heretofore received, and will endeavor to give satisfaction to all. (signed) I. J. BIRDSALL." This tells us that there was a partnership at the store and now Isaac becomes sole owner of the business. He rented the building. In the file is an ad he placed in Otsego Journal of 31 Dec 1890 : "BIRDSALL is selling first-class Groceries very cheap. -etc -" At sometime, he moved his store to the old stone building that stood at corner of Cliff St. & Marion Ave. and took on a partner, L. B. Ainsworth (see photos of store). Daughter, Mrs. Helen Brown wrote that he sold out his business just a few months before the fire of Feb. 1895 that burned Stag's Head Inn and the store. This is not quite right. In the Feb. 15, 1894 issue of the Otsego Journal newspaper: "L. B. Ainsworth has purchased the stock of goods and full interest in the grocery business of I. J. Birdsall in this village and took possession of the same on Sat. last (10th). Mr. Birdsall will donate his attention to the farm, so we hear." In the Obit. of his youngest sister Elida, there is mention that she resided with Isaac & Sarah while attending the Academy at Gilbertsville. Item in Gilbertsville Otsego Journal issue of 7 Apr 7 1932: "Isaac J. Birdsall, formerly a resident of Butternuts, died at New Kingston, NY, Thursday night, age 83 years. He was father of Mrs. Helen Brown, preceptress of the Mt. Upton School, and John G. Birdsall, town of Butternuts Supt. of Highways. We have not learned of funeral arrangements." | BIRDSALL, Isaac J. | 4549 | Paul Edward Gadsby of Route 3, Grove City was swimming in the Grove City Sportsman's Club pond about three miles north of Harrisville yesterday when he went under water and failed to come up. He drowned despite a valiant effort of his 16 year old brother to rescue him. The young man went under at 5:00 PM. His brother, Henry, noticed that Paul was not coming up as soon as usual and swam over to see if anything was wrong. Henry grabbed onto his struggling brother twice, but neither time could hold on to him. The body was found at 6:00 PM by scuba diver John Buchanan of Harrisville. Another scuba diver and the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department also participated in the search for the body. Mr. Gadsby was pronounced dead of drowning last evening by Dr. Donald Wonsettler, Assistant Mercer County Coroner. This pond in which the tragedy occurred is maintained by the Grove City Club for swimming and fishing. I has a mud base and was described this morning as being "not to big." Mr. Gadsby was born June 26, 1943 in Irwin Township, a son of Homer E. and Marian Irwin Gadsby. He married the former Patricia Ann Wimer on September 1, 1962. Mrs. Gadsby is expecting the couple's second child. Mr. Gadsby attended Irwin Township and Victory Area Joint Schools being graduated from the Victory Joint High School in 1961. He was a member of the Irwin Presbyterian Church. He worked as a route salesman for the Star Home Pride Bakery, Grove City. | GADSBY, Paul Edward (I35223)
